Nina Cosford, The Cove Fairlight

About

“In sleepy Fairlight, on the edge of the Firehills”

The Cove opened in April 2022. We are an independent freehouse, serving quality food and drink.

We have a cosy bar for socialising, a restaurant for revelling, a garden for lazy afternoons.

Pub inspired, seasonal food, freshly made. Weekly specials, lots of beer, really good wine, proper martinis. Vegan, GF, we’ve got you covered too. Kids welcome. Muddy boots encouraged. Dog friendly. Wanderers welcome.

History of The Cove

Converted from a cowshed in the 1920’s, the Cove Hotel was a small but glamorous getaway with large gardens and no liquor license. Mabel Schöneboom eventually gained permission to sell intoxicating drinks in 1924. Amy Johnson flew in for a cup of tea in 1931. By 1937 it was expanded into a 16 bedroom hotel, with a dance floor, sun-loungers, a restaurant that stayed open until 11pm, and five acres of landscaped gardens. Then war came…

In the years that followed, grounds were slowly sold off but customers remained steady. Throughout the sixties and seventies it became known for live music and dirty weekends. By 1995 is was called ‘The Fenton Arms’ and run by the mysterious Mr. A Fenton who soon began the process of turning the hotel into a care home. In 1997 it became the Cove Continental, but was back to the Cove again by 2000. It closed its doors in 2016, but Lynn the previous landlady still lives next door with fond memories. In 2019 the remains of the building were bought by Helmut Kleinschrod, who wanted to create a beautiful bar with great (German) beer and a cool vibe. Works were finished in 2021.
